Day in the Life of a Junior Data Scientist

Junior Data Scientist? Think analyst, problem solver, and translator of complexity.

I joined Akeso after completing a Master’s in Data Science and a BSc in Theoretical Physics, combining a long-standing interest in healthcare with a drive to tackle complex, real-world challenges. My experience in quantum algorithmic research furthered my interest in high-impact, analytical work, while growing up around healthcare professionals inspired a strong curiosity about health systems and how they can be improved. Akeso offered the perfect balance: technical depth and strategic consulting, all with the goal of making a sustainable difference in healthcare.

A Typical Day
Most mornings begin with a coffee and a review of where I left off, ready for our analytics team’s daily standup meeting. My workday blends individual analysis with frequent touchpoints, whether it’s reviewing a model with a senior member of the team or supporting a colleague by demonstrating how to use an internal analytics tool. For example, I recently worked with a Major NHS Trust, using scenario modelling and demand forecasting to streamline patient flow and reduce financial inefficiencies in emergency care units. As analysis concludes, the focus often shifts to delivery, whether that’s building a dashboard for client use or developing a data-driven narrative for our next stakeholder presentation.

Making an Impact
One of the most rewarding elements of my role is seeing the tangible impact of our work. The models I build are designed not just to inform but to enable better care, for example, helping hospitals reduce bottlenecks in emergency care. What’s unique at Akeso is how integrated we are with client teams: we don’t just analyse from afar; we visit hospitals, speak to frontline staff, and build pragmatic solutions rooted in real-world insight.

Balancing Analytics and Advisory
My day is split between technical problem-solving and client interaction. I use Python daily, whether building clustering models, simulating pathways, or deploying forecasting tools and translate those outputs into recommendations for healthcare leaders. It’s not about the complexity of the code; it’s about making the most impactful insight. Working alongside consultants with diverse backgrounds has honed my communication style and made me a better storyteller, capable of simplifying complexity without losing substance.

Growth and Culture
The culture at Akeso is one of support, curiosity, and shared expertise. The team is always there, whether you’re configuring a model or crafting a story for a board-level presentation. I’ve grown immensely in both confidence and capability. Having that space to learn, test, and take ownership has been invaluable.

Life Outside the Model
Beyond work, I make time to exercise, see friends, and step away from the screen. I’ve learned that some of the best solutions come not from pushing harder, but from stepping back and returning with a clearer mind.

Rio’s Final Thoughts
“If you’re considering healthcare data science, I recommend diving straight in. Get messy with real data, understand the system behind it, and always ask: can someone outside this room understand what I’m trying to say? Because the real power of data isn’t in the numbers, it’s in the change it enables.”
