Bon Secours Ireland was developing a new €213m acute hospital in Limerick to expand healthcare capacity, improve access to diagnostics and elective care, and establish a major new regional facility. Akeso supported the organisation to design, mobilise and launch the hospital safely, on time, and with a robust financial and operational foundation. This required managing a complex transition: maintaining continuity at the existing site while designing new operating models, procuring support services, assuring activation readiness, and building a credible financial model for a significantly expanded hospital.

Methodology

Akeso worked as an embedded delivery partner across the full hospital launch programme, combining commercial, operational, readiness, and financial expertise to support a safe and effective go-live. The methodology followed three stages:

1. Operating Model & Procurement

We began by designing the optimal support services model for the new hospital, assessing which functions should be delivered in-house and which were better suited to outsourced provision. Alongside this, we tested market capability, shaped a deliverable procurement strategy, and led the sourcing process from requirements definition through to contract award. This ensured that the operating model was aligned to the scale and complexity of the new facility while securing value for money and service resilience from the outset.

2. Activation Readiness & Go-Live Support

We then provided independent readiness assurance across clinical and operational domains to support the transition into the new hospital. This included mapping more than 180 clinical and operational pathways, identifying cross-functional risks, strengthening governance, and providing clear evidence-based insight to leadership ahead of go-live. Our role was to ensure that readiness activity translated into practical delivery actions, helping Bon Secours launch the hospital safely and on schedule.

3. Financial Modelling & Planning

Finally, we built a bottom-up, zero-based financial model to support operational and commercial decision-making for a hospital with limited historical data. The model covered more than 50,000 procedures and enabled scenario planning in response to changing operational conditions. It gave the organisation a single source of truth for a €100m+ operating budget and helped leadership respond rapidly to disruption while protecting revenue performance.
